The role of HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) in liquid detergents

HPMC, or hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, is a common water-soluble polymer widely used in the cosmetics, food, pharmaceutical and detergent industries. In liquid detergent formulations, HPMC has a wide range of functions.

1. Thickening
One of the most prominent uses of HPMC is as a thickener. Liquid detergents usually need to have a suitable viscosity to ensure their ease of use and good results. Too low a viscosity may cause the detergent to be too fluid and difficult to control during use; while too high a viscosity may affect the dispersion and solubility of the product.

HPMC can maintain a moderate viscosity for liquid detergents by forming a water-soluble colloidal network structure. Its solubility in water and the viscoelasticity it forms enable it to help detergent formulations maintain stable fluidity at different temperatures without affecting its rheological properties. This thickening effect not only improves the feel and use experience of the detergent, but also increases the stability of the detergent, allowing other ingredients in the formula (such as surfactants and fragrances) to be more evenly dispersed in the liquid.

2. Suspension stabilizer
In liquid detergents, many ingredients (such as bleach, enzymes, abrasives or other active ingredients) may settle due to density differences. As a suspension stabilizer, HPMC can effectively prevent the sedimentation of solid particles or insolubles, thereby ensuring that the ingredients of the detergent remain evenly distributed during storage and use. This is especially important for detergents containing particulates, bleach or enzymes, because the activity or effectiveness of these ingredients may decrease over time, and sedimentation will further affect the cleaning effect of the product.

The solution of HPMC has pseudoplastic flow characteristics, that is, it exhibits higher viscosity at low shear rates, while the viscosity decreases at high shear rates (such as squeezing the bottle or washing), which allows the detergent to remain suspended in a static state, but is easy to flow when used.

3. Film-forming and protective effects
HPMC has good film-forming properties, which enables it to form a protective film on the surface of clothes or items during the washing process. This film can play several roles: first, it can protect clothing fibers from mechanical wear during the washing process; second, after film formation, it helps to maintain the contact time between the active ingredients in the detergent and the stains, thereby improving cleaning efficiency. For special detergent formulations, such as softeners or anti-wrinkle agents specifically used to protect fabrics, the film-forming properties of HPMC can increase the effectiveness of these products, making clothes softer and smoother after washing.

4. Regulating foam properties
Foam generation and control is one of the key factors in detergent formulation design. HPMC can play a role in foam regulation in detergents. Although HPMC itself does not produce foam, it can indirectly affect the generation and stability of foam by adjusting the rheological properties and solubility of the system. For some applications that require less foam (such as automatic dishwasher detergents), the use of HPMC can help control the height of the foam and ensure smooth operation of the machine. For formulations that require rich foam, HPMC can help stabilize the foam and extend its existence time.

5. Improve product stability and shelf life
Liquid detergents may contain a variety of unstable active ingredients, such as enzymes, oxidants or bleaches, which pose challenges to the stability of the formulation. The presence of HPMC can effectively improve the dispersion state of these unstable ingredients and prevent them from undergoing physical and chemical changes by adjusting the viscosity, suspension and rheological properties of the solution. In addition, HPMC can also slow down the degradation rate of certain active ingredients in the formula to a certain extent, thereby extending the shelf life of the product. This is particularly critical for detergents containing high-efficiency detergent ingredients, which can ensure that the product maintains its designed cleaning ability throughout the shelf life.

6. Environmental protection and biodegradability
HPMC is a derivative derived from natural cellulose with good biodegradability and environmental protection. Compared with other chemically synthesized thickeners or stabilizers, HPMC can be degraded by microorganisms in an aqueous environment, thereby reducing the impact on the environment. With the improvement of environmental awareness and attention to sustainable development, more and more detergent manufacturers have begun to choose environmentally friendly raw materials such as HPMC to reduce the ecological footprint of their products.

The thickening effect of HPMC not only affects the viscosity of the product, but also significantly improves the use experience of liquid detergents.
